The Name Detective

Every plant and animal on Earth carries a secret second name, built from ancient Greek and Latin. Learn to read the pieces, and a name stops being a random label. It starts telling you what the living thing looks like, or which old story it came from.

Everything has two names

You have a common name that friends call you, and a full name written on official papers. Living things work the same way. A big cat might be called a cougar, a puma, or a mountain lion depending on where you live, but scientists give it just one official name that works everywhere: Puma concolor.

That two-word official name is written in Latin and Greek on purpose. Those languages belong to no country today, so a scientist in any part of the world can use the exact same name. A long time ago, a scientist named Carl Linnaeus set up this two-word system, and we still use it for every plant and animal.

Here is the detective's secret: those names are not random. They are built from small word pieces called roots, and each root has a meaning. Learn the roots, and you can read the names.

Now you know that a scientific name is a puzzle you can read. Break it into roots, and it describes the living thing. Follow it back to a myth, and it tells you a story. A hippopotamus is a "river horse," a daffodil remembers a boy named Narcissus, and a jellyfish's swimming bell is a "medusa" because it waves like her snaky hair.

A note on the stories: myths come in many retellings, so a plant's story may vary slightly from book to book. The name links themselves (Narcissus, Iris, Hyacinth, Daphne, Medusa, Hydra, Argus, Echidna) are real and are still used in scientific naming today.
