Welcome back, Detective! 🕵️
In Lesson 2 you designed your very own survey. Now it's time for the exciting part: going out and collecting real answers. But careful — this is where good data goes bad if you're sloppy. Today you'll learn the rules of clean data collection, practice keeping a tally, and train your eye to spot messy data.
📏 The Detective's Rules of Data Collection
- Ask everyone the exact same way. Changing the words changes the answers.
- Don't lead the witness. Keep your face and voice neutral — no hinting at the answer you're hoping for!
- Record answers immediately. Memory is a terrible notebook.
- Track who has answered. Nobody gets counted twice, nobody gets forgotten.
- Aim for at least 20 responses. Small samples make wobbly patterns.
Activity 1: Tally Practice
Detectives record answers with tally marks — four strokes, then a diagonal fifth to bundle them (卌). Pretend your classmates are answering the question "What's your favorite lunch?" Click each answer as it comes in, and watch your tally chart build itself. Collect at least 10 answers!
