Practice Problems

Try them, get help one step at a time, then print how it went.

Practice: try it, then get help one step at a time

Reading powers, the zero power, one negative power, and adds-or-multiplies. Hint gives a nudge, Show next step shows one worked step at a time, Reveal answer checks, and Hide help / start over clears the card.

On paper or an index card. Use the math word and the plain-English word.

  1. Say the one idea that separates lines from exponentials.
  2. What is 34? Name the base and the exponent.
  3. Why is 50 equal to 1?
  4. x: 0, 1, 2, 3 and y: 2, 6, 18, 54: which family, and why?

  1. Lines add the same amount every step; exponentials multiply by the same number every step. Constant difference versus constant ratio.
  2. 81. Base 3, exponent 4.
  3. Each step left in the table divides by 5; from 51 = 5, one step left is 1. Nothing multiplied yet: the do-nothing number.
  4. Exponential: the ratio is 3 every step (the differences 4, 12, 36 are not constant).
