Practice: try it, then get help one step at a time
Tables, graphs, rules, and stories. Hint gives a nudge, Show next step shows one worked step at a time, Reveal answer checks, and Hide help / start over clears the card. Say the interval and the units every time.

On paper or an index card. Use the math word and the plain-English word.
- In your own words: what is the average rate of change, and what goes on top and on the bottom of the fraction?
- A table: hours 1, 3, 5 and miles 40, 130, 220. Find the average rate of change from hour 1 to hour 5, with units.
- f(x) = 2x + 5. Find the average rate of change from x = 1 to x = 4.
- A tank went from 500 gallons at noon to 380 gallons at 4 p.m. Find the rate and say what the sign means.

- How much the output changes for each step of the input over a stretch. Top: the change in the output. Bottom: the change in the input.
- Top: 220 − 40 = 180 miles. Bottom: 5 − 1 = 4 hours. Rate: 45 miles per hour.
- f(1) = 7, f(4) = 13. Top 6, bottom 3, rate 2 per step of x.
- Top: 380 − 500 = −120. Bottom: 4. Rate: −30 gallons per hour. Negative: the tank is losing water.
