Practice Problems

Try them, get help one step at a time, then print how it went.

Practice: try it, then get help one step at a time

Try each problem yourself first. Hint gives a nudge, Show next step shows one worked step at a time, Reveal answer checks, and Hide help / start over clears the card.

On paper or an index card. Use the math word and the plain-English word.

  1. The rule is y = 2x − 1. Find y when x = 3.5, write the point, and say whether it is on the line through the table's dots.
  2. In your own words: what does the line through the dots stand for?
  3. A vending machine sells drinks for $2 each. Is the graph of cost against number of drinks continuous or discrete? Why?
  4. A candle burns down 1 inch every hour. Is the graph of its height against time continuous or discrete? Why?

  1. y = 2 × 3.5 − 1 = 6. The point is (3.5, 6). Yes, it is on the line: every input of the rule makes a point on that line.
  2. All of the points of the rule at once: every input you could choose, each with its one output, drawn together.
  3. Discrete. You buy a whole number of drinks. There is no in-between input like 2.5 drinks, so there is no in-between point, and the dots stay separate.
  4. Continuous. Any amount of time is real, so every in-between moment has a real height. Connect the dots into a solid line.
