Tell the story from the graph

Every graph in Lesson 4 was a story: a ball, a freezer, a day of weather.

Tell the story from the graph

Every graph in Lesson 4 was a story: a ball, a freezer, a day of weather. Now we go both ways on purpose. First, read a graph and tell its story. Use the behavior words from Lesson 4 as your vocabulary: climbing, flat, falling, the highest point, the intercepts.

0 to 3 minutes: climbingThe graph is increasing: distance from home is growing. You are walking away from home, 6 blocks in 3 minutes.
3 to 5 minutes: flatThe graph is level: distance is not changing. You stopped, 6 blocks from home. Maybe you are talking to a friend. Flat means not changing, not that you are moving steadily.
5 to 8 minutes: fallingThe graph is decreasing: distance from home is shrinking. You are coming back. It takes 3 minutes to cover the 6 blocks, the same pace as going out.
The interceptsy-intercept (0, 0): you started at home. x-intercept (8, 0): you are back home at 8 minutes. The maximum (3, 6) to (5, 6): the farthest you got, 6 blocks.
Two more words for stories. Flat, or level, means the output is not changing: stopped, resting, holding steady. Steeper means faster: a steep stretch changes more in each minute than a gentle one. A steep climb on a distance graph is fast walking; a gentle climb is slow walking.
