Practice Problems

Try them, get help one step at a time, then print how it went.

Practice: try it, then get help one step at a time

Say what the slope and y-intercept mean, predict forward and backward, and judge the prediction. Hint gives a nudge, Show next step shows one worked step at a time, Reveal answer checks, and Hide help / start over clears the card.

On paper or an index card. Use the math word and the plain-English word.

  1. What makes the least squares line the best line?
  2. A plant's height is modeled by H = 5 + 2w (centimeters, weeks). What do 2 and 5 mean?
  3. Predict the height at week 6, and find the week it reaches 25 cm.
  4. The plant was measured in weeks 0 to 8. Is week 6 interpolation or extrapolation? Week 100? Does week 100 make sense?

  1. It makes the total of the squared distances from the points to the line as small as possible.
  2. It grows about 2 cm a week; it was about 5 cm tall at week 0.
  3. H = 17 cm. 5 + 2w = 25, so w = 10.
  4. Week 6: interpolation. Week 100: extrapolation; 205 cm is not believable for this plant.
