The Words We Use
The vocabulary for this lesson, in one place.
Words we use
| Word | Plain English | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| y-intercept | Where the curve crosses the y-axis: (0, a). | Read a off the equation, or read the crossing off the graph. |
| Domain | All the x values you can put in: for an exponential, all real numbers. | The curve never ends left or right. |
| Range | All the y values that come out: y greater than 0 when a is positive. | Never 0, never negative. |
| Asymptote | A line the graph gets closer and closer to without touching. Here, y = 0. | Walk the table left (growth) or right (decay) and watch the outputs shrink. |
| End behavior | What the graph does at the far right and far left. | Say it plainly, then as x goes to infinity or negative infinity. |
| Increasing, decreasing | Goes up from left to right (b above 1), or goes down (b between 0 and 1). | Decided by b. |
