Practice Problems

Try them, get help one step at a time, then print how it went.

Practice: stories, far terms, and targets

Each story asks for a rule, a far term, or which term reaches a target. Hint gives a nudge, Show next step shows one worked step at a time, Reveal answer checks, and Hide help / start over clears the card. Ask what n counts before you write anything.

Finished the practice? Print a page that shows each question, what you typed or chose, the correct answer, and how it went. Good for showing a teacher or keeping in a folder.

On paper or an index card. Use the math word and the plain-English word.

  1. A gym costs $40 for the first month and $25 for each month after. Arithmetic or geometric? Write the total cost for n months.
  2. A video has 3 views, then 6, then 12, then 24, doubling each hour starting at hour 1. Write the rule and find hour 8.
  3. An orchard has 4 trees in year 0 and adds 6 a year. Why is the rule 6n + 4 and not 4 + 6(n − 1)?
  4. Name the kind of sequence: simple interest balances; compound interest balances.

  1. Arithmetic, d = 25. T(n) = 40 + 25(n − 1) = 15 + 25n.
  2. Geometric, r = 2. an = 3 · 2n − 1; a8 = 3 · 128 = 384.
  3. The counting starts at year 0, so year n is n steps from the start.
  4. Arithmetic; geometric.
