From a graph: count the rise and the run

Pick two points on the line where it crosses a grid corner. Start at the left one. Go up or down to the height of the right one: that is the rise. Then go right to reach it: that is the run. Count the squares.

The rise can be negativeRise means the change in y, and a change can be downward. On a falling line the rise is negative, so the slope is negative. The run is always counted to the right, so it stays positive. That is what makes the sign of the slope tell you climbing or falling.
