Practice: try it, then get help one step at a time
Opposites already there, one equation multiplied, both multiplied, and choosing the method. Hint gives a nudge, Show next step shows one worked step at a time, Reveal answer checks, and Hide help / start over clears the card.

On paper or an index card. Use the math word and the plain-English word.
- Why does adding the two equations give a true equation?
- Solve x + y = 8 and x − y = 2 by elimination.
- For 2x + 5y = 1 and 3x − y = 10, what would you multiply to eliminate y?
- How does elimination connect to Unit 1, Lesson 1?

- Adding equal things to equal things keeps things equal: left plus left equals right plus right.
- Add: 2x = 10, x = 5, y = 3. Check: 5 + 3 = 8; 5 − 3 = 2.
- Multiply the second by 5: 15x − 5y = 50. Then 5y and −5y are opposites.
- The two terms are additive inverses, so they add to the additive identity 0 and the variable disappears: make a zero appear.
