Practice: try it, then get help one step at a time
Systems where substitution is the natural choice, walked through the five steps. Hint gives a nudge, Show next step shows one worked step at a time, Reveal answer checks, and Hide help / start over clears the card. Check every pair in both equations.

On paper or an index card. Use the math word and the plain-English word.
- Write the five steps of substitution.
- Solve y = x + 2 and 3x + y = 10.
- Why are you allowed to replace y with x + 2 in the second equation?
- Solve x + y = 9 and y = 2x.

- Solve one equation for a variable; substitute into the other; solve the one-variable equation; back-substitute; check the pair in both.
- 3x + (x + 2) = 10, 4x = 8, x = 2, y = 4. Check: 4 = 2 + 2; 6 + 4 = 10. (2, 4).
- At the solution, y equals x + 2 in the first equation, and it is the same y in the second, so the two are interchangeable there.
- x + 2x = 9, x = 3, y = 6. (3, 6).
