One Step at a Time

Abraham's Mother's Day dinner

Finn reads this

Two percents in one problem. Go one step at a time and you will be fine.

The dinner

Finn reads this

Abraham takes his mom out for Mother's Day. His meal is $12.99, his mom's is $14.79, and two drinks are $2.75 each. The food comes to $33.28. Tax is 7.5 percent: 33.28 times 0.075 is $2.496, which rounds to $2.50, so the bill is $35.78.

food: $12.99 + $14.79 + 2 × $2.75 = $33.28tax: $33.28 × 0.075 = $2.496 ≈ $2.50with tax: $33.28 + $2.50 = $35.78

Then the tip: percent of what?

Finn reads this

Abraham leaves a 15 percent tip. Fifteen percent of what? If he tips on the food before tax, 15 percent of $33.28 is $4.99 and the total is $40.77. If he tips on the bill after tax, 15 percent of $35.78 is $5.37 and the total is $41.15. Both are fine, as long as you say which one you did. The order changes what the tip is a percent of.

on the food: $33.28 × 0.15 = $4.99, total $40.77on the bill: $35.78 × 0.15 = $5.37, total $41.15
ElleMath-speak

In a multi-step problem, each percent is applied to the result of the step before it, unless the problem says otherwise.

FinnPlain English

Finish one change before you start the next, and know what each percent is a percent of.

Fill in the receipt

Finn reads this

A $40 sweater is 25 percent off, and then 7 percent tax is added to the sale price. Each line unlocks when the one above it is right.
