Sales Tax: More Than 100 Percent

The price, plus a little more

Finn reads this

Tax, tips, and fees. The extra money on top of the price.

A game and its tax

Finn reads this

A video game costs $40 and the sales tax is 7 percent. (Real tax rates depend on where you live; 7 percent is a made-up rate for practice.) The tax is 7 percent of $40: 40 times 0.07 is $2.80. So you pay $40 plus $2.80, which is $42.80.

tax: $40 × 0.07 = $2.80total: $40 + $2.80 = $42.80

The one-step way

Finn reads this

Here is the shortcut, and it is really Unit 1. You pay 100 percent of the price plus 7 percent more, which is 107 percent. So multiply by 1.07 and the tax is already in: 40 times 1.07 is $42.80 in one step.

100% + 7% = 107% = 1.07total: $40 × 1.07 = $42.80
ElleMath-speak

The total with tax is the price multiplied by 1 plus the tax rate.

FinnPlain English

You pay all of the price, plus 7 percent more. That is 107 percent, so multiply by 1.07.
