Every point is a small story

Every point on a proportional graph is a small story. Jordan mows lawns for $8 an hour, so his graph is y = 8x. The point (3, 24) sits on his line. It means: 3 hours of mowing earns $24.

A point is a pair of numbers, written as an ordered pair (x, y): the input first, then the output. To read a point, use this sentence frame and fill in the blanks:

The sentence frame The point (x, y) means: in x [input units], you get y [output units].

So (3, 24) means in 3 hours, you get 24 dollars. (5, 40) means in 5 hours, you get 40 dollars. Say the units every time, or the numbers are just numbers.

A proportional relationship always multiplies by the same number, the unit rate.
