Probability Master Β· Lesson 1
The Coin Flip Lab
One flip is pure mystery. A thousand flips are almost boringly predictable. Today you'll see that transformation happen with your own eyes.
πͺ What IS probability?
Probability is a fraction: the ways something can happen Γ· all the ways anything can happen. A fair coin has 2 faces, and heads is 1 of them β so P(heads) = 1/2, or 50%.
That does not mean flips take turns! It means something sneakier β and the lab below will show you exactly what.
Experiment 1: The Flip Machine π°
Flip one coin at a time, then unleash bigger batches. Watch the heads percentage β wild at first, calmer and calmer as flips pile up. Get to 500 total flips to earn your lab badge.
Experiment 2: The Gambler's Trap π³οΈ
You just flipped 5 heads in a row (it happens more than you'd think!). What's the chance the NEXT flip is heads?
Experiment 3: Probability as a Fraction π°
A spinner has 8 equal slices: 3 red, 4 blue, 1 gold.
1. P(red) = ?
2. Which is MOST likely on one spin?
3. You spin 800 times. About how many golds should you expect?
π Your XP Progress
- β Ran 500+ flips and saw the calm +10 XP
- β Escaped the Gambler's Trap +8 XP
- β Mastered probability as a fraction +7 XP
Total XP earned: 0 / 25
π¨οΈ Do it with a REAL coin
Download the Flip Lab Journal β flip a real coin 50 times, record every batch of 10, and compare your hands-on results to the machine. Does the real world obey the law too?
