The Olympians were the 12 major gods and goddesses who ruled the universe from their palace on Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece. They came to power after overthrowing the Titans (the previous generation of gods) in a great war called the Titanomachy.
Important: These gods were immortal (couldn’t die) but they had very human personalities – they could be jealous, angry, loving, and petty. They often interfered in human affairs and had favorite mortals they helped or punished.

Meet the 12 Olympians

1. ZEUS – King of the Gods
Domain: Sky, thunder, lightning, justice, and law
Roman Name: Jupiter
Symbols: Thunderbolt, eagle, oak tree, scepter
Sacred Animals: Eagle, bull
Family: Married to Hera (his sister), father of many gods and heroes including Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Perseus, and Hercules
Personality: Powerful but not always wise, known for having many affairs, could be merciful or vengeful
Key Story
Zeus overthrew his father Cronus to become king. Cronus had eaten all his children, but Zeus’s mother tricked him and saved Zeus!

2. HERA – Queen of the Gods
Domain: Marriage, women, childbirth, and family
Roman Name: Juno
Symbols: Peacock, crown, pomegranate, wedding veil
Sacred Animals: Peacock, cow, cuckoo
Family: Zeus’s wife and sister, mother of Ares and Hephaestus
Personality: Jealous (especially of Zeus’s girlfriends), vengeful, protective of married women, majestic
Key Story
Hera punished many of Zeus’s lovers and their children, including making Hercules’s life difficult with 12 impossible labors.

3. POSEIDON – God of the Sea
Domain: Sea, earthquakes, storms, horses
Roman Name: Neptune
Symbols: Trident, dolphins, horses
Sacred Animals: Horse, dolphin, bull
Family: Brother of Zeus and Hades, father of the hero Theseus and the cyclops Polyphemus
Personality: Moody and temperamental like the sea, competitive (especially with Athena), powerful
Key Story
Created the first horse and competed with Athena to be patron of Athens (he lost when she created the olive tree).

4. DEMETER – Goddess of the Harvest
Domain: Agriculture, harvest, nature, seasons
Roman Name: Ceres
Symbols: Wheat, torch, cornucopia (horn of plenty)
Sacred Animals: Serpent, pig
Family: Sister of Zeus, mother of Persephone
Personality: Nurturing, generous with good harvests, but could cause famine when angry
Key Story
When Hades kidnapped her daughter Persephone, Demeter’s grief created winter. This myth explains the seasons!

5. ATHENA – Goddess of Wisdom
Domain: Wisdom, warfare strategy, crafts, weaving
Roman Name: Minerva
Symbols: Owl, olive tree, shield, spear, helmet
Sacred Animals: Owl, serpent
Family: Daughter of Zeus (born from his head!), no mother
Personality: Wise, strategic, fair, helpful to heroes, virgin goddess
Key Story
Born fully grown from Zeus’s head wearing armor! Helped heroes like Perseus and Odysseus on their quests.

6. APOLLO – God of the Sun
Domain: Sun, music, poetry, prophecy, medicine, archery
Roman Name: Apollo (same name!)
Symbols: Lyre, laurel wreath, bow and arrow, sun
Sacred Animals: Swan, raven, wolf, dolphin
Family: Son of Zeus, twin brother of Artemis
Personality: Beautiful, talented, could bring plague or healing, loved music
Key Story
Drove the sun chariot across the sky each day. His Oracle at Delphi gave prophecies to humans.

7. ARTEMIS – Goddess of the Hunt
Domain: Hunt, moon, wilderness, animals, childbirth
Roman Name: Diana
Symbols: Silver bow and arrows, moon, deer
Sacred Animals: Deer, bear, wild boar
Family: Daughter of Zeus, twin sister of Apollo
Personality: Independent, protective of nature and young women, virgin goddess, fierce
Key Story
Turned the hunter Actaeon into a deer when he saw her bathing. Protected wild animals fiercely.

8. ARES – God of War
Domain: War, violence, courage, civil disorder
Roman Name: Mars
Symbols: Spear, shield, helmet, chariot
Sacred Animals: Vulture, dog, boar, serpent
Family: Son of Zeus and Hera
Personality: Violent, unpopular among gods, loved battle for its own sake (unlike strategic Athena)
Key Story
Had an affair with Aphrodite. Was caught in a golden net by her husband Hephaestus!

9. APHRODITE – Goddess of Love
Domain: Love, beauty, pleasure, procreation
Roman Name: Venus
Symbols: Rose, dove, mirror, seashell
Sacred Animals: Dove, sparrow, swan
Family: Born from sea foam, married to Hephaestus, mother of Eros (Cupid)
Personality: Irresistibly beautiful, vain, could be kind or cruel in love

Started the Trojan War! Paris chose her as the fairest goddess, and she helped him steal Helen.

10. HEPHAESTUS – God of the Forge
Domain: Fire, metalworking, crafts, volcanoes
Roman Name: Vulcan
Symbols: Hammer, anvil, tongs, volcano
Sacred Animals: Donkey, crane
Family: Son of Hera (some say Zeus too), married to Aphrodite
Personality: Kind, peaceful, hardworking, only ugly god, brilliant craftsman
Key Story
Made all the gods’ weapons and tools. Created Pandora, the first woman, on Zeus’s orders.

11. HERMES – Messenger God
Domain: Messages, travel, trade, thieves, sports, border crossings
Roman Name: Mercury
Symbols: Winged sandals, caduceus (staff with snakes), winged cap
Sacred Animals: Tortoise, ram, rooster
Family: Son of Zeus, father of Pan
Personality: Clever, mischievous, helpful, fastest of all gods, trickster
Key Story
As a baby, stole Apollo’s cattle and invented the lyre to apologize. Guides souls to the Underworld.

Hestia – Goddess of the Hearth

Roman Name: Vesta
Symbols: Fire, kettle
Personality: Peaceful, kind, virgin goddess, stayed out of drama

Dionysus – God of Wine
Domain: Wine, parties, madness, ecstasy
Roman Name: Bacchus
Symbols: Grapevine, thyrsus (pine cone staff)
Personality: Fun-loving but dangerous when angry, youngest Olympian
