The Great Animal Sort

There are millions of kinds of animals. How does anyone keep them straight? Scientists use a clever trick: groups inside groups inside groups. Learn the trick, and you can sort any animal on Earth (and read some very old Greek names hidden in their labels).

Big idea: boxes inside boxes

Imagine a giant toy box labeled ANIMALS. Inside it are smaller boxes. Inside those are even smaller boxes, going all the way down until each box holds just one kind of animal.

Scientists call this classification. Every animal on Earth gets sorted into the same set of boxes, from the widest group down to the narrowest. Sorting this way lets a scientist in Japan and a scientist in Brazil talk about the exact same animal, even if they speak different languages.

There are seven main boxes, from biggest to smallest. Lots of kids remember their order with this silly sentence:

The Ladder of Life 🪜

Here are the seven boxes, from the widest to the narrowest. Tap each rung to open it, and watch one animal, the monarch butterfly, get sorted a little more exactly at every step, until only monarchs are left.

    At the top, the box holds every animal alive. At the bottom, it holds only one: Danaus plexippus, the monarch. That two-word bottom label is the animal's scientific name, and every kind of animal has its own.

    Sorting Game 1: Backbone or not? 🦴

    The very first sort splits the animal kingdom in two. Run your fingers down your own back. Feel that bumpy ridge? That's your backbone. Animals with a backbone are vertebrates. Animals without one are invertebrates (there are way more of those!).

    Sorting Game 2: Name that class 🐾

    Vertebrates split into five famous classes: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. Careful: a few animals live in surprising places! Pick the class each one belongs to.

    Zoom in: what makes a mammal?

    You are a mammal. So is a whale, a bat, and a mouse. What do all mammals share? Four big clues:

    • 🧥 Hair or fur at some point in their life (even whales have a few whiskers as babies!).
    • 🍼 Milk. Mammal mothers feed their babies milk they make themselves.
    • 🌡️ Warm-blooded. Their bodies stay warm even when the world is cold.
    • 🫁 Lungs. They breathe air, even the ones that live in the ocean.

    That last clue is why a dolphin has to swim up for a breath, but a fish never does.

    Sorting Game 3: Mammal, or a trickster? 🕵️

    Some animals wear a great disguise. A bat looks like a bird. A dolphin looks like a fish. Use the four clues to decide: is it really a mammal?

    The mammal families

    Even inside "mammals" there are smaller boxes, called orders. Here are seven of them. Notice how many names are really old Greek and Latin words describing what the animal does:

    Secret Greek names 🏛️

    Here's the coolest part. Scientists needed names that nobody's everyday language already "owned," so they borrowed from ancient Greek and Latin, and especially from Greek myths. That means a lot of animals are secretly named after gods and monsters from stories that are thousands of years old.

    The best one is a mammal: the echidna, a spiny little creature that (surprise!) lays eggs. It's named after Echidna, a half-woman, half-snake "mother of monsters" from Greek myth. Ready to be a name detective?

    • Monotremes (platypus, echidna) are mammals that lay eggs. What "rule" do they break, and which mammal rules do they still follow?
    • Pick any animal in the room or yard and sort it as far down the ladder as you can.

    A note on accuracy: we say "seven main boxes" for clarity; real biologists use extra in-between ranks too. And all animals belong to one kingdom (Animalia). The "groups" kids sort in the games are the classes and orders inside that kingdom.
