Short lessons for students about 12 years old who are getting ready for Math 1. Every lesson says the math word and the plain-English version side by side, then lets you practice with hints and worked steps until it clicks.
The Do-Nothing Numbers and Their Undo Partners
Meet 0 and 1, the numbers that change nothing, and the opposites and reciprocals that undo everything. Then find the hidden 1s and 0s in math you already do.
Start Lesson 1Commute, Associate, Distribute
The properties, and why they are named that. Commute means trade places, associate means change partners, distribute means hand one out to everyone. Then find out which operations pass the test.
Start Lesson 2Translate Subtraction and Division
Only addition and multiplication follow the properties, so before you solve, turn every subtraction into adding the opposite and every division into multiplying by the inverse. Includes multiplying fractions, negatives as owe and have, and the invisible 1s.
Start Lesson 3Solving Equations
Undo to get the letter alone, one step at a time. Add the opposite to make a 0 appear, multiply by the reciprocal to make a 1 appear, and keep both sides of the balance equal.
