Math 1 · Unit 7 · Lesson 4 · part 5 of 6
Match the equation to its graph, by elimination
Same test-day habit as Unit 3, Lesson 3: do not plug in points.
Match the equation to its graph, by elimination
Same test-day habit as Unit 3, Lesson 3: do not plug in points. Read what the equation forces the graph to do, cross out every graph that breaks a rule, and check the one that is left. For an exponential it takes two looks.
- 1b: which way does it go?b bigger than 1 climbs from left to right. b between 0 and 1 falls. Cross out every graph going the wrong way.
- 2a: where does it cross the y-axis?The curve must cross at (0, a). Cross out any survivor that crosses somewhere else.
If two graphs survive both looks, they share direction and y-intercept, so look at speed: a bigger b (or a smaller b for decay) makes the curve bend harder.
