Math 7 · Unit 2, Lesson 2: Part, Whole, and Percent · Tile 3 of 3

Find the Percent or the Whole

Working backward on the bar

Finn reads this

Now the part is given, and either the percent or the whole is missing. Both are the bar read backward.

Find the percent

Finn reads this

A player makes 18 of 24 free throws. The whole is 24, the part is 18, and the percent is missing. 18 out of 24 is three fourths, and three fourths is 0.75, which is 75 percent.

1824 = 34 = 0.75 = 75%

Find the whole

Finn reads this

You have saved $45, and that is 30 percent of the price of a bike. The part is $45, the percent is 30, and the whole is missing. If 30 percent is $45, then 10 percent is $15, and 100 percent is 10 times that: $150. The bike costs $150.

30% = $4510% = $15100% = $150

A proportion is a fine way to write that reasoning down: part over whole equals percent over 100, so 45 over the whole equals 30 over 100. It is the same two equal ratios from Unit 1.
