Write it down. Do every change on paper, one line per step. Changing signs in your head is the number one reason for missed problems. If you changed something, it should be on the paper.
The property names, if you need them. The answers use these words; you do not have to memorise the spelling.
- Commutative: swap the order.
- Associative: change the grouping (change partners).
- Distributive: hand the outside number to every term inside.
- Identity: adding 0 or multiplying by 1 changes nothing.
- Inverse: the opposite undoes adding; the reciprocal undoes multiplying.
