Grade 7 · Unit 1 · Lesson 8

Unit Rate Problems

The whole unit on real problems. Two ways that always agree: the unit rate way finds how much for one and multiplies, and the scale factor way finds how many times bigger and multiplies both amounts. Better buys, cookies, a team on a steady pace, and whether Emily makes it to school before the bell.

And I say it the way you would say it to a friend. Same idea, two ways.

The big idea

Finn says

A proportional relationship always multiplies by the same number, the unit rate.

A proportional relationship always multiplies by the same number, the unit rate. That sentence solves every problem in this lesson. The unit rate way: find how much for one, then multiply by how many you want. The scale factor way: find how many times bigger the new amount is, then multiply both amounts by that. They always agree, so use one and check with the other. A better buy is the lower price for one, found by comparing unit rates in the same units. And in a story like Emily's ride, pick the unit rate that answers the question: she knows the miles, so she wants minutes per mile.

The parts of this lesson

Each part is its own short page. Go in order, or pick the one you need.

The study guide for this lesson is also the study guide for all of Unit 1: the thread sentence, the four ways to find the unit rate, the two graph tests, and what (0, 0) and (1, r) mean. Plus a worksheet with an answer key and a short lesson plan for the parent or tutor.

Where this goes next

Unit 2 is percent. A percent is a rate out of 100, so every percent problem is a proportional relationship that always multiplies by the same number.
