One picture for 1 (a stroke), one for 10 (a heel bone), one for 100 (a coil of rope), one for 1,000 (a lotus flower). Repeat the pictures and add them up โ that's the whole system. No zero needed, and the order doesn't even matter.

Two marks: โฎ means ten and | means one, pressed into wet clay. They counted up to 59 in each spot, and each spot is worth 60 times the one next to it. Sounds strange? Your clock still does it โ 60 minutes, 60 seconds.

Letters are numbers: X is always 10, wherever it sits. Add them from big to small โ but a small letter before a bigger one subtracts (IV = 4). With no zero and no place value, it's fine for carving dates and terrible for doing math.

Bamboo sticks laid on a counting board: count the sticks to read a digit, and a crossed stick means 5. Ones stand UP, tens lie FLAT, and an empty space means zero. True place value, a thousand years before our digits โ and merchants calculated by physically moving the rods.

Dots are 1 and bars are 5, stacked like floors of a temple โ each floor worth 20 times the one below. And their greatest invention: a shell ๐ that means zero, centuries before Europe had one.

Our ten digits, invented in India and carried west by Arabic scholars. The superpower: WHERE a digit sits decides what it's worth, and zero holds empty places open. It beat every system on this page โ because it makes math the easiest.

Computers are packed with tiny switches: OFF is 0, ON is 1 โ that's the whole alphabet. Places double (1, 2, 4, 8, 16โฆ) instead of ร10, so eight switches can reach 255. Three of those numbers paint every color on your screen. The Lesson button takes you to the full Binary Lab.

This unit looks like a history tour, but it's really a place-value unit in disguise: students only truly see how our numbers work when they visit systems that work differently โ no place value (Egypt, Rome), a different base (60, 20, 2), or a hard-won zero. The kids come home to 4,507 understanding why it means what it means โ plus 5,000 years of history along the way.
