Math 1 · Unit 1

Solving Equations and Inequalities in One Variable

Seven lessons: the do-nothing numbers and their undo partners, the properties, translating subtraction and division, solving equations, longer equations, inequalities, and absolute value inequalities. Each card below opens a lesson. Every lesson has practice with hints, a study guide, a worksheet with an answer key, and a lesson plan.

Lesson 1 · Identity and inverse

The Do-Nothing Numbers and Their Undo Partners

Meet 0 and 1, the numbers that change nothing, and the opposites and reciprocals that undo everything. Then find the hidden 1s and 0s in math you already do.

Lesson 2 · The properties

Commute, Associate, Distribute

The properties, and why they are named that. Commute means trade places, associate means change partners, distribute means hand one out to everyone. Then find out which operations pass the test.

Lesson 3 · Step One

Translate Subtraction and Division

Only addition and multiplication follow the properties, so before you solve, turn every subtraction into adding the opposite and every division into multiplying by the inverse. Includes multiplying fractions, negatives as owe and have, and the invisible 1s.

Lesson 4 · Solving equations

Solving Equations

Undo to get the letter alone, one step at a time. Add the opposite to make a 0 appear, multiply by the reciprocal to make a 1 appear, and keep both sides of the balance equal.

Start Lesson 4

Lesson 5 · Longer equations

Longer Equations: Combine, Then Solve

More terms, the letter on both sides, and parentheses. Rewrite, combine the like terms, then move the x terms one way and the plain numbers the other. Every line has a property name, and you can say it out loud.

Start Lesson 5

Lesson 6 · Inequalities

Solving Inequalities: Gator Eats Greater

Read the sign (the gator eats the bigger number), see on a number line why multiplying by a negative turns it around, then solve with the same three steps as Lesson 5. One new rule, and every line still has a property name.

Start Lesson 6

Lesson 7 · Absolute value

Absolute Value Inequalities: Distance From Zero

Absolute value means distance from zero. Less than a distance is between, and the word is and. Greater than a distance is outside, and the word is or. Set up two problems, solve both with the Lesson 6 rules, and join the answers with the right word.
