The Cafeteria Mystery

Ms. Martinez, the cafeteria manager, is drowning in lunchtime chaos. Organize the noise into data, find the hidden pattern, and save lunch.

Unit 2 · Lesson 2 of 4 25 XP available

📣 The mystery begins…

Imagine 150 kids yelling their lunch choices at you all at once: "Pizza!" "I brought mine!" "Yogurt!" "Pizza!" "Tacos!" "Ugh, meatloaf…" Can you spot any pattern in that? Nope. 🙈

That's Ms. Martinez's problem. Some days she runs out of hot lunches; other days she throws trays away. She knows there's a pattern — she just can't see it in the chaos. Your mission: organize the chaos so the pattern pops out.

Activity 1: File the Chaos 🗂️

Here come the lunch orders, one shout at a time. File each one into the right bucket — watch the counts grow, and the chaos turn into data.

Activity 2: Read the Week 📅

You filed one lunch period. Ms. Martinez did that for a whole week — here's her table showing how many of 100 students chose the hot lunch each day:

DayHot lunch menuChose hot lunchNote
Monday🍕 Pizza85 of 100Line out the door!
Tuesday🌮 Tacos70 of 100
Wednesday🥩 Meatloaf20 of 100Many trays thrown away
Thursday🐟 Fish sticks35 of 100Yogurt choices double
Friday🍔 Burgers75 of 100

Now answer like a Pattern Hunter:

1. Which day does the hot-lunch line get the most business?

2. Something interesting happens on fish-stick day. What is it?

3. Next Wednesday is meatloaf again. About how many of 100 kids should Ms. Martinez expect in the hot-lunch line?

Activity 3: Advise Ms. Martinez 💡

This is what pattern hunting is for: better decisions. Based on the week's data…

How many meatloaf trays should she prepare next Wednesday?
